THE MOUNTAIN MAN
Discovering Mountain Man Media
Growing up in the picturesque town of Libby, Montana, my life was deeply intertwined with the rugged landscapes and the close-knit community that define this unique place. Libby wasn’t just the backdrop to my childhood; it was the very fabric of my upbringing. This rich environment nurtured a profound appreciation for the stories and traditions that are the essence of Montana life, a connection that was profoundly shaped by my grandfather, Steve Gary.
My grandfather was a larger-than-life figure in my world as well as his many other Children and Grandchildren. Renowned for his exceptional skills as a trapper, hunter, and, above all, as a devoted fisherman, he became a local legend. In the early 1970s, he ran a beloved store called Steve’s Fishing Hole, where his name was synonymous with the thrill of catching giant fish and spinning unforgettable fishing tales. His expertise was so esteemed that it became an integral part of the community’s culture, with his stories cherished almost as much as the fish he caught.
Recently, while sifting through my storage unit, I stumbled upon some treasured artifacts from his era. Among them were his shop sign, photos of colossal fish, and numerous fishing reports he had penned for the local paper. It was like unearthing a piece of history, a tangible reminder of his lasting impact on our community.
One of my most cherished memories is attending the McGregor Lake Fishing Tournament with my grandfather each year, starting when I was just four years old. I was the only toddler I knew who could confidently tie his own hooks and bait his own traps, a skill honed through his patient guidance. This annual tradition wasn’t merely about fishing; it was a rite of passage, a way to bond with family and connect with the timeless traditions of our community.
Now, as my grandfather, at 83, continues to join me at the cabin each year, our tradition of fishing at McGregor Lake has evolved into a multi-generational celebration. Each year, four generations gather to fish, share stories, and reconnect with the heritage that has shaped our lives. This profound connection to our roots inspired me to launch Mountain Man Magazine.
Mountain Man Magazine was created with a deep-seated desire to preserve and celebrate the rich tapestry of Montana life. Through this publication, I aim to spotlight the traditions, people, and places that make our state so unique. It’s more than just stories about fishing and hunting; it’s about honoring a way of life that has been handed down through generations and ensuring these stories endure.
Our magazine is dedicated to capturing the spirit of Montana through features that explore the lives of local legends, the intricacies of traditional practices, and the breathtaking landscapes that frame our stories.

It’s about paying homage to the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring future generations to value and continue the legacy of Montana’s rich heritage.
In each issue of Mountain Man Magazine, you’ll find a reflection of family’s story intertwined with the broader narrative of Montana. It’s a tribute to my grandfather, to the community of Libby, and to all those who hold dear the timeless traditions of the Mountain West.
As we embark on this journey to explore and share these incredible stories, I invite you to join us. Together, let’s keep the spirit of Montana alive, one story at a time. We at Mountain Man Magazine, are dedicated to celebrating and preserving the traditions of Montana. Through the magazine, Stephen aims to highlight the rich heritage and timeless stories of the Mountain West, drawing inspiration from his own experiences and family history.
